Defense Minister Summoned to Parliament Inquiry

Minister of Defense Mariya Didi has been summoned to Parliament for questioning regarding the May 6 attack on former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
The inquiry led by the parliament’s National Security Committee intends to clarify how the incident occurred, if there were signs before the attack, and how to prevent future occurrences. MNDF and Police personnel, the Minister of Home Affairs, and other officials were previously summoned by the committee.
Minister Mariya faced major backlash regarding the incident. Many speculated that the minister failed to act upon a call from Member of Parliament Ilyas Labeeb, divulging information on a plan involving an attack on President Nasheed.
She was subject to more criticism after she addressed a letter to parliament, stating MNDF will answer to the inquiry as an organization, refusing officers to be summoned to the inquiry individually.
MNDF, in charge of President Nasheed’s security, and Police Intelligence officers were heavily criticized after the attack occurred.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih established a committee to conduct an Intelligence Audit to investigate the incident.
