President Nasheed has expressed his desire to change the system of governance to a parliamentary system. In a message he sent to President Ibrahim Solih, Nasheed expressed his interest in becoming the Prime Minister as well.
President Nasheed requested this change in a message he sent to a few cabinet members and parliament members. He further stated that he cannot stay in the sidelines anymore and that he wanted to change the system of governance to a parliamentary system and become the Prime Minister.
Nasheed proposed that the system be changed by February 2022, and that the new government should be formed through the parliament. He further appealed to cancel the 2023 presidential election and change the constitution to allow the parliament to appoint a president after the 2024 parliamentary elections.
President Nasheed had previously advocated and campaigned for a parliamentary system to be implemented in the Maldives.
