Local Government Authority (LGA) has stated that all newly elected council members will be taking their oath after the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Chief Executive Officer of LGA Afshan Latheef stated that the preparations for the new elects to swear in are underway and the current estimated date is the 18th of the next month.
The CEO stated that this is so that it would be convenient for all councilors to swear in and commence work after Ramadan and Eid.
The Local Council Elections that took place this year was initially to be held during 2020 but due to the spread of COVID19 the elections were delayed until further notice over two times. The councilors elected from 2017 remained as the Council Act was revised to extend their term.
MDP won a majority of the seats from this year’s Local Council Elections. They further contested for the most seats in the election. Despite this MDP had lost the majority in most of their pledged territories and lost Male-City Mayorship along with it. When the election commenced, MDP had won 70 seats by auto-election.
