Islamic Ministry has decided which groups of people will be receiving the dates gifted for Ramadan every year by Saudi Arabia.
The ministry has decided to distribute the dates among 10,944 people registered on the list of financially disadvantaged people. They have also decided to include children living in the Villigili and Hulhumale state-run facilities, the prisoners under the jurisdiction of correctional services and the residents of Guraidhoo facility.
Islamic Ministry announced that they will be partnering up with Male' City council to distribute the dates to the chosen people. People eligible for receiving dates living in the islands will have them delivered to them by their relevant island or city council's.
The dates gifted by Saudi Arabia this year were less compared to the previous years. While we receive around 50 tonnes of dates from Saudi Arabia every year, we received approximately 25 tonnes this year.
Every year, the most priority is given to the financially disadvantaged when distributing dates.
