The parliament has urged the elections comission to guarantee a free and fair election in the upcoming local council elections. The election has been scheduled for the 10th of this month.
Starting today's parliament session, speaker Nasheed remarked that today's session will be the last that would be held before the council elections.
During his opening remarks, Speaker Nasheed appealed to the the members and staff of the elections commission, to hold a free and fair election. He also further stated that counting voter ballots and announcing results should be done transparently, and that all efforts must fall under the legal premises of the law. He assured that he had no doubts that the elections commission would meet all of these requirements, to ensure that the people get a fair election.
Local council elections had been postponed twice previously. 3934 candidates will be contesting in the elections this Saturday. 308 candidates have withdrawn their candidacies.
