No Authority to Fine Litterers: Shifa

Male City Mayor Shifa Mohamed has expressed concern regarding the matter of City Council not having authority to tackle the issue of trash being placed on the roads of Male’.

As a lot of speculation and debate surrounding the topic of trash accumulating on the streets, Mayor Shifa tweeted that the authority to fine people who litter on to the street lies with Environment Ministry under Environment Protection Agency (EPA). Mayor further tweeted that she has previously requested to give Male’ City Council and Hulhumale’ Development Corporation the authority to fine such offenders and that it is important to maintain a clean and healthy environment all around Greater Male’. She further stated that it is a waste of taxpayer money when having to remove such litter from the streets.

As this issue takes notice, the amounts of trash on the street has increased and has become a nuisance to the public.
