Malé City Mayor Shifa Mocks Homeless People

Shifa Mohamed, Mayor of Malé City, has publicly made fun of homeless people.
Responding to a photographs of homeless people sleeping near the Malé Fish Market, Shifa tweeted that “It’s a bit too much when people take this much stuff when they go to sleep. Let’s use a genuine photo”.

The photos depict 4 men sleeping on the ground, with several cardboard boxes and black garbage bags around them. Their photos were first shared on social media by local businessman Mohamed Firaq. He emphasised the importance of providing temporary accommodation for people in such situations.

“These are also people who live in our society. Maybe some people may be offended by these photos. But I think it’s important”, he said.

Many people on social media have criticised Mayor Shifa’s comments on Twitter.
Some have pointed out that Shifa’a comments were shameful and lacking in empathy.
Independent MP Ahmed Usham (Vilimalé) slammed the Malé City mayor in a tweet, and called for her resignation. He also called on Malé City councillors to take a vote of no-confidence against Shifa.
