The government published a list of islands in Haa Dhaal Atoll that had development initiatives underway. In this list was included an uninhabited island of the Atoll, Maavaadhoo.
Maavaidhoo has been uninhabited for a number of years and the reasoning behind why Maavaidhoo was included on the list of islands with on-going development initiatives is currently unknown. The list was published by the official government Twitter handle. Criticizing the matter, Ali Adam the former Consul of the Maldivian Consulate in Trivandram, India tweeted questioning whether the citizens can believe in the validity of such claims made by the government.
Replying to Ali Adam's tweet, opposition PPM's Vice President and MP for Naifaru Constituency Ahmed Shiyam stated that some islands in Maldives were being made into foreign islands far from the Maldives and that he was not surprised. Shiyam was referring to the statement made by President Solih saying that Addu Shangri-La Resort and Herethere’ is outside Maldivian waters.
The Previous Ambassador for India Ahmed Mohamed has also questioned whether Mavaidhoo is now newly inhabited and that it should be affirmed that citizens have settled there now.
The government’s official twitter handle has revealed that including Mavaidhoo, 263 million MVR’s worth of development projects are currently ongoing in Haa Dhaal Atoll.
