Former Housing Minister and opposition mayoral candidate for the Malé City Council has said that it is in the best interest of the people of Malé and the country as a whole that the government disclose the agreement signed today between the Maldives and India regarding Uthuru Thila Falhu.
The government has classified several details about the UTF agreement. Among these details, the government has refused to disclose for how long Indian personnel would be present at UTF.
In a press conference held by the Maldives Nationa Defence Force after the signing of the agreement, the Vice Chief of Defence Force Brig Gen Abdur Raheem Abdul Latheef had claimed that the development at UTF would not be a military base, and only Indian technicians would be stationed there.
When asked repeatedly, he refused to disclose the organisation to which the technicians belonged.
