FAM Condemns Remarks of Ruling Party Activist about National Team Captain

The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has expressed its concern regarding derogatory comments made by MDP activist, Suzan Ibrahim Fulhu, regarding Ali "Dhagandey" Ashfaq, captain of the Maldivian National Football Team.
A statement released by FAM read that the things that Ashfaq had been accused of on social media were "not an ordinary matter", and they threatened to take action against people who spread false, divisive rumours about footballers.
Suzan Ibrahim Fulhu, in a tweet since deleted, had claimed that Ashfaq and another footballer were "extremists" who were prepared to go on "jihad" to Syria.
Many people have responded to Suzan Ibrahim Fulhu's remarks with criticism, and have called for legal action to be taken against her.
The FAM statement read that the Maldivian National Football Team's players adhered to the guidelines and rules set by FIFA, the highest authority in football, and abided by the laws of the Maldivian State and were exemplary in their devotion to the principles of Islam.
FAM further said that such accusations and talk could result in many obstacles to the Maldives' progress in international football. The statement described the tweet as one that could cause "dissent" and "fear" in the country.
