Govt Squeezing People for Budget Support: MP Latheef

The money for the government’s budget support is from whatever is “squeezed out” from young peoples’ motorcycles, said MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef (Fares-Mathoda).
In a statement published on Twitter, MP Latheef asked if the government would be capable of doing any good for the nation’s youth. He said that the youth wanted jobs, capital to start businesses, and a life of self-sufficiency. He stated that the government has been unable to provide any of that.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had promised never to impose fines on motorcycles without providing appropriate parking spaces while on the campaign trail. He has received much criticism from many people for his perceived inability to live up to the promise.
In addition to traffic violations, the government has imposed heavy fines on people who violate HPA guidelines such as going outside during curfew hours or without a mask. The government has earned MVR 2.5 million in the first week of February from fines imposed on HPA guideline violations alone.
