President Nasheed, the current Majlis Speaker, resigned from his post 9 years ago after listening to the voice of the people, and it was the right thing to do, said former Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel.
He said that Nasheed had resigned because he could not fulfil his duties. Resignation was the right course of action if one could not fulfill one’s duties, said Dr Jameel in a tweet.
Dr Jameel stated that the people would not tolerate inappropriate, illegal behaviour on the part of their leaders. He alleged that there was no difference between President Solih’s current administration and President Nasheed’s government from a decade ago.
Both governments have taken the judicial system as their plaything, said Dr Jameel. President Nasheed was compelled to resign amidst protests that had erupted after he had had a Criminal Court judge arrested without charge.
The judicial system is still being played with, said Dr Jameel. Some are being imprisoned, and others are being bargained with all in the name of justice, he said, referencing former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s continued incarceration and the deals made with former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, who had testified against Yameen in the trial that sentenced him to five years in prison.
