President Solih Repeats Consistently Broken Promise of Housing Units

During his annual presidential address to the Majlis, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has repeated the promise of beginning work on the 5,000 additional housing units in the Greater Malé Region.
President Solih has made this promise in every presidential address he delivered since his inauguration in 2018. In his first address in 2019, he had promised that 4,000 new units would be built in the Greater Malé Region.
God willing, we will begin building 4,000 new housing units in Hulhumalé for people residing in Malé, this year.
President Solih, 2019 presidential address to the Majlis
In 2020, President Solih had repeated his promise. At the beginning of 2020, no work on the 550 housing units that had been announced in 2019 had begun.
He repeated his promise of beginning work on 4,000 units in 2020.
The work on the 4,000 housing units for Malé residents will begin in Hulhumalé this year. People who had not received housing through the Veshifahi programme will... have housing arranged for them
President Solih, 2020 address to the Majlis
In President Solih’s 2021 Majlis address, he broke from tradition by adding an extra 1,000 units to his annual promise; he claimed that work on 5,000 total housing units would begin this year.

In November 2020, during the two-year anniversary celebration of President Solih’s presidency, President Solih told RaajjeTV that work on 1,000 housing units would begin before the end of the year.
Work has, however, not begun as of yet.

The government has not initiated any programme or project to solve the housing issues in the Maldives to date. In addition, the Hiyaa Flats that had been built and allocated by the previous administration have, unlike the promise made in the 2020 addresss, still not been handed over to their rightful tenants.
