David Stepetic, General Manager of Gili-Lankanfushi, has been dismissed from his job. He was accused of having attmepted to destroy a sandbank between Gili Lankanfushi and Hinmafushi, in Kaafu Atoll.
Gili-Lankanfushi confirmed that Stepetic has been dismissed from his job, according to Mihaaru newspaper.
The General Manager and some of the resort staff had engaged in dreding up the sandbank before they were caught by locals in the act. The Police and the EPA are currently investigating the case.
The President of the parent company of Gili-Lankanfushi, HPL Hotels and Resorts, David Brown issued a statement which read that they had looked into the incident and they expressed regret. They said that they would abide by whatever the government decides.
Some locals have criticised the government for not taking measures against the resort. The Police have confiscated Stepetic's passport and have ordered him to remain in the country.
