Govt Earns over MVR 6.6 Million Through Fines in the First Fortnight of the Year

The government has earned MVR 6.6 million through fines within the first fortnight of the year.
Statistics published by the Ministry of Finance show that the government earned MVR 6.6 million between 1st January 2021 and 14th January 2021. That is around MVR 470,000 per day on average. The government earned MVR 5.9 million in the same period last year.
It should be noted that the revenue earned through fines in the year 2020 declined compared to 2019. The decline was probably due to the lockdowns in Malé City in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. However, various fines and penalties were imposed on people who broke curfew; and the Health Protection Agency had increased the value of the fines as the state of public health emergency progressed.
The government expects to collect a large amount in fines and penalties in 2021 as well. A full sum of MVR 5.2 million is expected for traffic violations. MVR 14 million for breaking the law, MVR 10 million for violating regulations, MVR 1.9 million from breaking agreements, MVR 8.7 million from labor-related penalties, MVR 100,000 for debt- and legal penalties, and MVR 3 million from other miscellaneous penalties.
