Malé City Council Must Disclose Salaries in 7 Days: Information Commissioner

The Information Commissioner’s office has demanded that the Malé City Council disclose the salaries of the Mayor and the office-employees of the Malé City Council within 7 days.

A private citizen had lodged a Right to Information (RTI) request with the Information Commission.

As per law, the State’s institutions are required to disclose the salaries of their personnel. However, the Malé City Council has failed to comply.

The City Council had refused to provide the information when the citizen had directly asked at their office, claiming that they would publish it on their website. Unhappy with the answer, the citizen lodged an RTI request with the Information Commission.

The Information Commissioner, Hussain Fiyaz, demanded that the salaries be disclosed within 7 days at a hearing held today.
