Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has stated that the country’s target to bring 500,000 visitors to the country in 2020 was achieved earlier than expected due to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s insightful decisions.
The government changed the country’s target tourist arrivals to 500,000 for the year 2020 due to the setbacks faced by the global travel industry and the border closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The government expected the target to be reached by 25th December. However, the goal was achieved earlier on 17th December. Celebrations were held at Velana International Airport to welcome the 500,000th visitor.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Dr. Mausoom stated that the government’s target was achieved earlier than expected due to the insightful decisions of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the bravery shown by the tourism industry. The Minister also thanked and congratulated the people of Maldives for the achievement. The minister specially thanked those working in the tourism industry and everyone involved in the industry.
The minister also noted that the Health Protection Agency and health officials have played a vital role in advertising Maldives as a safe destination to the world. He also noted that government agencies and volunteers also immensely assisted in these efforts.
