People’s National Congress’s (PNC) PG leader Adam Shareef Umar has accused the government of trying to postpone the local council elections due to fears that government-aligned candidates would lose the election. The election previously scheduled to be held in April 2020 was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Adam Shareef Umar’s accusations came via a tweet in response to President of the Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef’s claim that although the commission was trying to hold the election on March 2021, the Health Protection Agency has not provided the clearance required to conduct the election on March.
Speaking to Mihaaru news after a meeting with the Health Protection Agency (HPA) the President of the Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef stated that the commission has informed the HPA that it will be impossible to conduct the election in March if the health emergency is not annulled by the end of January. However, he stated that the HPA has not confirmed that the agency will annul the health emergency by the end of January.
In response to Shareef’s statement, Adam Shareef tweeted that the government was plotting with the Elections Commission to postpone the election. He also stated the government was trying to postpone the election as the government has failed.
