Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim has expressed concerns that Supreme Court judges appear to be influenced by political currents, stressing that they must remain politically neutral. His remarks came during discussions on an amendment proposed by Hoarafushi MP Abdus-Sattar to reduce the number of Supreme Court judges from seven to six.
Nazim, who was previously sentenced to 25 years by the Supreme Court, highlighted that his lawyer at the time was now-Justice Husnu Al Suood. He criticized the court’s handling of his case, stating that he had been sentenced without trials in the lower or High Court. “The Supreme Court's full bench sentenced me in a case that hadn't been adjudicated in either the lower court or High Court—it would be accurate to say they just called me in off the street,” Nazim remarked.
He asserted that such judicial practices continue and must be addressed. Nazim emphasized that the public granted the PNC a supermajority to put an end to these issues and reform the judiciary. He further stated that judges must remain independent and not be influenced by political leaders.
