Health Minister Announces New Treatment Guideline to Address Medical Negligence

Health Minister Abdullah Nazim has announced that work has commenced on developing a new treatment guideline aimed at reducing medical negligence.
Speaking on a televised program, Minister Nazim emphasized that strengthening the healthcare system requires protecting service providers, service delivery processes, and patients. He noted that the absence of laws ensuring these protections hinders the system’s ability to balance the rights of service providers and recipients.
Minister Nazim stressed that without proper legislation, it is impossible to monitor and address cases of negligence effectively. He revealed that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has directed the development of a new guideline to address these concerns.
Nazim stated that the guideline will be developed with input from international experts and local medical professionals, ensuring it is tailored to the Maldivian context. He expressed confidence that familiarizing doctors with the new protocol will lead to a reduction in negligence cases.
This announcement follows a recent incident in Ga. Villingili, where a pregnant woman and her child died due to alleged inadequate medical care. The police are currently investigating the matter.
