The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised the public to take precautionary measures based on air quality levels, as pollution levels in Malé and other parts of the Maldives have begun to deteriorate.
In a post on X, HPA urged residents to monitor air quality through the Ministry of Tourism and Environment’s website or the IQAir Visual app and follow safety guidelines accordingly. The agency has outlined three alert levels based on the severity of air pollution.
Under a Yellow Alert, there is an increased risk of respiratory issues. HPA advises individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions to limit outdoor exercise, wear N95 or similar masks, keep doors closed, and use air purifiers.
An Orange Alert indicates that vulnerable groups, including infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with respiratory or heart conditions, are at greater risk. These groups are advised to limit outdoor activities, wear N95 masks, and take similar precautions.
A Red Alert signals serious health risks for everyone. HPA strongly recommends that all individuals limit outdoor exposure, wear N95 masks, and ensure indoor air quality is maintained.
With worsening air quality levels, HPA stresses the importance of vigilance and protective measures to minimize health risks, particularly for vulnerable individuals.
