South Korea's National Assembly voted 204-85 on Saturday to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol over his attempt to impose martial law, with three abstentions and eight invalid votes. The decision, requiring a two-thirds majority, suspended Yoon from office, making Prime Minister Han Duck-soo interim president.
The chamber erupted in gasps upon hearing the result, while thousands outside cheered. Yoon has vowed to contest the impeachment in the Constitutional Court, which has 180 days to decide his fate.
Yoon’s conservative People Power Party (PPP) initially boycotted the first vote but later participated amid internal divisions. At least seven PPP legislators supported impeachment, ensuring the required votes were secured. If removed, Yoon would be South Korea's second president to be ousted through impeachment after Park Geun-hye in 2017.
