MP Azaan Calls for Investigation into MDP's Violent Threats Against President Muizzu

The Member of Parliament for Hithadhoo Medhu constituency, Ahmed Azaan, has called for a formal investigation into the threats made by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Azaan’s concerns stem from remarks made at an MDP rally held in Kulhudhuffushi, where a speaker suggested that President Muizzu could face the same fate as the late President Mohamed Ameen Didi. MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail defended the statement, hinting that what happened to President Ameen could potentially happen to president Dr Muizzu.
In today’s parliamentary session, the Member for Milandhoo constituency, Hassan Mufeed, submitted an urgent motion calling for an investigation into these threats by Fayyaz and other MDP members. Azaan, while addressing the urgent motion, emphasized the importance of reflecting on historical events when discussing the situation. He pointed out that the tragic event involving Mohamed Ameen Didi was not the result of any wrongdoing by him toward the people, but rather a violent act driven by a group’s thirst for power.
Azaan further expressed concerns that the MDP's actions today seem to be fueled by a similar ambition for power. He questioned whether the MDP is contemplating violent actions in their pursuit of political dominance, highlighting that such statements should not be taken lightly.
The MP also referenced the MDP’s violent past, pointing to the period following the downfall of their first government. During this time, MDP members called for the execution of various individuals, while also engaging in violent protests and acts of terrorism that caused significant harm to property and lives across the country.
Azaan raised concerns about a National Council meeting scheduled for tonight, fearing that unrest could follow, as has been observed in the past after similar meetings. The MP mentioned the 2012 incidents of arson in across the country, which were linked to such gatherings.
This situation, Azaan stressed, cannot be ignored, and he has called for senior MDP figures to be summoned by the Police for questioning. The investigation into these potential threats is critical to ensuring the safety and security of the nation and preventing further political violence.
