Health Minister Abdullah Nazim has confirmed that a team from the World Health Organization (WHO) is currently in the Maldives to support the nation’s tobacco control initiatives. Speaking at a panel discussion organized by PSM, titled "Let's Protect Today's and Tomorrow's Generation from Tobacco," Minister Nazim highlighted the ongoing collaboration but refrained from providing further details about the team's work.
Nazim emphasized that, while the international team is spearheading tobacco control efforts, the Maldivian government aims to enhance local involvement in the plan's implementation. The panel discussion was intended to gather feedback from the public to inform the next steps in the country's tobacco control strategy.
As part of its commitment to tackling tobacco use, the government has decided to establish cessation clinics on all islands, providing resources for those seeking to quit. Additionally, nicotine replacement products, such as patches and gums, will be covered under Aasandha, the national health insurance scheme, to facilitate access to necessary treatments for tobacco cessation.
The government’s efforts reflect its commitment to protecting future generations from the harmful effects of tobacco use.
