UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson Killed in Targeted Shooting Outside Manhattan Hotel

Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth's insurance division, was fatally shot outside the Hilton Midtown hotel in New York City early Wednesday morning. The incident, which occurred just before the company's annual investor conference, has been described by police as a premeditated attack.
Thompson, 50, was struck in the back around 6:45 a.m. by a masked gunman, who fled the scene on an electric bike through Central Park. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the attack was not random but a "pre-planned, targeted" act.
The killing, which shocked New York during the city's holiday season, comes amidst broader discussions about safety and targeted violence. The crime occurred hours before the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting, a highly anticipated event that proceeded under heightened security measures.
Thompson’s wife, Paulette, disclosed that he had received threats, though she was unaware of the specifics, hinting at a possible insurance-related motive. Thompson, who had been UnitedHealthcare's CEO since 2021, oversaw operations at the largest U.S. health insurer, which serves millions nationwide.
UnitedHealth, currently dealing with the fallout of a significant data breach affecting its Change Healthcare unit, canceled its investor event following the tragedy. CEO Andrew Witty expressed the company’s grief, calling the incident a "very serious medical situation" during a brief address at the conference.
The gunman, who waited for Thompson outside the hotel for several minutes, used what appeared to be a silenced pistol, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. Police are continuing to investigate the motive, with no suspects apprehended at this time.
Industry peers, including Eli Lilly CEO Dave Ricks, condemned the killing as a shocking and tragic act. "He was assassinated essentially in the street," Ricks said.
Thompson’s career at UnitedHealth spanned nearly two decades. A company statement offered condolences to his family and colleagues, remembering him as a visionary leader in the healthcare industry.
