UN Highlights Disability Crisis in Gaza Amid Ongoing genocide

The United Nations has declared Gaza to be in a "crisis of disability" due to the devastating impact of ongoing genocide. Philip Lazzarini, head of the UN Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA), revealed that Gaza now has the highest number of children suffering mutilation globally. Since the war began, one in five families in Gaza has at least one disabled member, with half of these cases involving children.
Lazzarini highlighted that the war has led to an epidemic of traumatic injuries requiring urgent rehabilitation, but medical infrastructure is severely lacking. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one in four people wounded in war suffer long-term injuries, requiring sustained care and rehabilitation services.
According to official reports, over 44,500 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have been killed since the war began in October 2023, with more than 105,000 injured. The crisis has drawn sharp international criticism, particularly over Israel's alleged use of starvation as a weapon and the prevention of humanitarian aid, described as deliberate efforts to target civilians.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), further escalating international scrutiny of its actions in the region.
As the genocide enters its second year, calls for accountability and humanitarian intervention continue to grow amid worsening conditions for Gaza's population.
