President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified key amendments to two pivotal legislations: the Elections Commission Act (Act No. 8/2008) and the Anti-Corruption Commission Act (Act No. 13/2008). Both amendments were passed by the Parliament during its 53rd sitting of the 20th Majlis on Monday, November 25, 2024.
Changes to the Elections Commission Act
The Second Amendment to the Elections Commission Act grants the President the authority to appoint the President and Vice President of the Elections Commission. These appointments will be made from among the existing members of the Commission and will require approval by a majority vote in the Parliament.
Amendments to the Anti-Corruption Commission Act
The Third Amendment to the Anti-Corruption Commission Act introduces similar procedural changes. The President is now required to appoint the President and Vice President of the Commission from among its members, subject to majority approval by the Parliament.
Additionally, the Amendment revises the resignation protocol for the Commission’s leadership. The President or Vice President must now submit their resignation in writing to the President of the Maldives.
The legislation ensures that the current President and Vice President of the Anti-Corruption Commission will retain their roles unless removed through legal procedures.
Both amendments will come into effect upon their ratification and publication in the Government Gazette.
