India has deployed 20,000 more troops to the state of Manipur in response to the recent escalation of violence.
These are in addition to the 50 troops sent to Manipur after a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah in recent days.
Manipur government security adviser, Kuldeep Singh said, “Security forces of the city held a security review meeting in which security aspects of all districts and Imphal city were reviewed. The meeting was attended by officials from Army, Police, CRPF, BSF and ITBP.
With this, 90,000 additional troops from a total of 90 troops have been deployed to Manipur in the past 10 days. The move comes amid increasing violence in the area, media reports quoted officials as saying.
The latest clashes began on November 7, when a woman belonging to a Hmar family was set on fire in her house in Zairavn village in Jiribam district.
According to some media reports, between October 1 and November 18, there were at least 16 separate incidents of death, injury, arson and major clashes.
Between November 7 and 18, at least 20 people were reported killed in Jiribam alone.
