The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $21.95 million financing package to strengthen the Maldives' capacity to combat climate change and improve food security. The package includes a $4 million concessional loan and a $17.95 million grant, aimed at enhancing resilience and sustainability across the nation.
The project will upgrade early warning systems in Malé and Addu, providing real-time weather monitoring through the Maldives Meteorological Service. It also includes nature-based solutions such as stormwater drainage and mangrove restoration in Kulhudhuffushi City, as well as coastal protection measures like artificial reefs.
To support food security, the ADB will introduce climate-smart farming techniques in HDh. Atoll and Addu, alongside the construction of a multipurpose facility at the Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Center for training and research. These efforts will empower local farmers and agribusiness entrepreneurs, with a focus on women and youth.
The financing package is supplemented by a $3 million grant from the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia, a $1 million grant from the Ocean Resilience and Coastal Adaptation Trust Fund, and a $1.5 million technical assistance grant.
The ADB remains committed to fostering a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable Asia-Pacific region, working toward eradicating extreme poverty.
