President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the National Teacher Training Programme, a major initiative to develop a strong local teaching workforce for Maldivian schools. The launch event, held at the Maldives National University (MNU) Auditorium, was attended by Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, cabinet ministers, and state officials.
During the ceremony, President Muizzu awarded scholarships to 135 students selected for this year’s program. The initiative, a fulfillment of a key presidential pledge, aims to increase the number of qualified local teachers and reduce reliance on expatriate educators. Designed for students who aspire to become teachers, the program allows participants to pursue an education degree after completing a foundational teaching course beginning in Grade 11.
The programme provides each enrolled student with a monthly stipend of USD 97 and focuses on areas where there is a shortage of teachers, prioritizing these high-need subjects. As part of the broader "Thaiba" project—an education initiative funded by the Global Partnership for Education—the National Teacher Training Programme marks a transformative step in Maldivian education.
