Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has emphasized the critical role of technology in addressing climate change during a meeting with Chief Impact Officer of Planet Andrew Zolli at COP16 in Colombia.
The discussions centered on the environmental challenges facing the Maldives and the potential application of Planet's satellite data to address these issues. Minister Thoriq and Zolli explored strategies for utilizing satellite technology to combat beach erosion, conserve biodiversity, and enhance the Maldives' resilience to climate impacts.
Minister Thoriq stressed the vulnerability of small island nations to climate change, highlighting the urgent need for modern technologies to tackle these pressing challenges. In response, Zolli reaffirmed Planet's commitment to supporting the Maldives in its environmental protection efforts and enhancing resilience against climate change.
Additionally, Minister Thoriq participated in the high-level Ocean Day ceremony at the UN Biodiversity Conference, reiterating the Maldives' commitment to the goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030. He underscored the importance of prioritizing biodiversity preservation and called on all nations to support this vital initiative.
