Maldives Parliament has officially approved the appointment of Ahmed Sareer as the country's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, with an overwhelming 86 votes in favor. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu nominated Sareer for the prestigious role, submitting his name for parliamentary consideration on October 15.
The nomination was reviewed by the Foreign Relations Committee, which granted unanimous approval prior to the parliamentary vote. Currently, Sareer holds the position of Ambassador at Large within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Sareer’s distinguished career began in 1986, during which he has undertaken numerous pivotal roles, including serving as Foreign Secretary and as Ambassador to the United States. His recent tenure at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah from November 2018 to September 2024 focused on Asian affairs and conflict resolution.
Throughout his career, Sareer has represented the Maldives at the SAARC Secretariat and has participated in twelve sessions of the UN General Assembly. Notably, he chaired the Alliance of Small Island States from 2015 to 2017. He holds degrees in Social Sciences and Foreign Affairs and Trade and is also recognized as an accomplished artist, with his works exhibited internationally and featured in official venues.
