Maafaru International Airport has resumed international flight operations following the successful expansion of its runway. The airport, which was inaugurated in 2019 and began international operations in July 2020, has become a preferred entry point for private jets transporting tourists to luxury resorts in the Noonu, Raa, and Baa Atolls.
The airport temporarily paused international operations in May 2024 to facilitate the runway expansion. Managed by Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL), Maafaru International Airport now expects approximately 100 private jets to land by January 10, 2025.
The runway extension, now measuring 2,800 meters, allows the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, including the Airbus A320, Boeing 737, and Boeing 777. In addition to the runway work, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC) was contracted in August to expand the airport's apron, with completion expected next month. This expansion will increase the airport’s parking capacity from 13 to 26 jets, enhancing its ability to serve high-end tourists traveling to nearby luxury destinations. Plans for two taxiways are also in development as part of the airport’s modernization.
IASL reported a substantial rise in airport activity last year, with 353 jets landing at Maafaru, marking an increase of 125 jets compared to 2022. Additionally, 1,943 tourists arrived via the airport, underscoring Maafaru's growing importance in the Maldives' tourism infrastructure.
