The Maldivian delegation took a bold stand during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, walking out as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began his address. This symbolic protest underscored the Maldives' unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause, a stance notably championed by the President of the Maldives, Mohammed Muizzu.
President Muizzu, who has been vocal about his support for Palestine, has made it clear that the Maldives will continue to advocate for the recognition of Palestine as an independent state on international platforms. His administration has consistently condemned the actions of Israel in occupied Palestinian territories, labeling them as acts of terrorism.
In a recent high-level meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, President Muizzu assured his counterpart that the Maldives remains steadfast in its support for Palestine. "The Maldives will not waver in its efforts to see Palestine recognized as a sovereign nation," he affirmed, reiterating his country’s firm stance in the international arena.
Addressing the General Assembly, President Muizzu called on the global community to come together to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine. He emphasized the urgent need to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of the Palestinian people, urging for Palestine to be granted full membership in the United Nations.
"The situation facing the Palestinian people is dangerous and untenable," President Muizzu declared. "It is time for the international community to act, to uphold justice, and to recognize the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination."
The Maldives’ firm stance on the Palestinian issue continues to solidify its role as a leading voice in advocating for Palestinian rights on the global stage.
