The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has won all three seats in the Male' City Council by-elections held today.
Fathimath Shaufa of the PNC secured victory in the Henveyru West constituency, while Fathimath Ishan won the Mahchan Goalhi Central constituency. Additionally, Ali Aiman of the PNC triumphed in the Hulhumale seat. They contested against candidates from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
These by-elections were necessitated by the previous members occupying these seats winning the parliamentary elections held in April earlier this year.
This defeat adds to a series of recent setbacks for the MDP, which also lost the presidential election in 2023 and the parliamentary election in April of this year.
