Drugs worth 47.5 million MVR have been seized before reaching the public in the past six months, Homeland Security and Technology Minister Captain (ret.) Ali Ihusaan said.
The minister said this while addressing the people of Addu at a rally during the President’s official visit to the four southern atolls.
Speaking at the rally, the Minister said that one of the biggest problems facing Maldives is the drug problem. The minister said he is working under the direction of the President to fight the issue.
The minister also said that he attaches importance to providing rehabilitation to drug addicts. When President Dr. Muizzu took over the government, more than 700 people were scheduled to be given drug addiction treatment.
When we took over the government, about 700 drug addicts were scheduled for treatment. Of these, 300 have already started treatment and we are now arranging the treatment of the rest.

Similarly, the minister noted that appropriate measures are being taken to prevent drugs from being taken to the streets. They are patrolling the coastline 24 hours a day, he said.
According to police statistics, 298 people were arrested in connection with drug cases in the last quarter of last year.
