Ooredoo Maldives has announced that the International PEACE Cable will be connected to the Ooredoo landing site in Kulhudhuffushi City today.
This is the first time an international submarine cable has been connected to an island other than Hulhumalé. The system is expected to be operational in the 3rd quarter of this year.
The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef.
The international submarine cable will also connect Maldives to Singapore, Europe, and Africa. Ooredoo Maldives is investing in the submarine cable to improve internet service latency and increase capacity.
The cable will also enhance 5G capabilities and pave the way for a truly digital Maldives that will open up opportunities for innovative services.
“We would like to thank Ooredoo Maldives for choosing Kulhudhuffushi City to host the landing station of the new international submarine cable. The hope is that Kulhudhuffushi City will become a digital hub, and our society, and the people of Maldives, will benefit further,” Kulhudhuffushi City Mayor Mohamed Athif said.
Ooredoo believes that with the successful connection to the PEACE Cable landing station, the northern region of Maldives can become a destination for digital opportunities.
In addition to the opportunities to provide faster services, the opportunity to host data center services in Kulhudhuffushi will be opened. Similarly, digital businesses and software development facilities will thrive in the northern islands.
