27 Million MVR Lost in Scams Since Late Last Year: Police

A total of 27 million MVR has been stolen from people through scams since the end of December last year, the Maldives Police Service said.
Speaking at a press conference being held by the Serious and Organized Crimes Division of the police, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ahmed Nafiz said the scams have spread widely.
Police records show that about 27 million MVR has been lost from the scams since the end of last year, he said. Since the police started keeping records, about 57 million MVR has been lost through scams in total, however he added that the policed have been able to recover roughly 27 million MVR from the money that had been stolen.
Nafiz noted that there are major challenges in investigating the cases due to the organized nature of the scam operators and the development of media resources. He noted that this has caused serious difficulties in recovering the money.
“However, the police will continue to serve the people to the best of their ability and will work to recover the money lost,” Nafiz said.
Superintendent of Police Abdullah Rasheed, head of the Economic Crime Department, said more than 28,000 cases of scams have been reported to the police since the records were started.
He said the scam cases include fraudulent extortion of flats/land through phone calls, hacking scams by sending links and fake rewards, and pretending to be a family member or friend from an unknown number and selling dollars.
