Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Captain (retired) Ali Ihusaan, has said that efforts are being made to designate a separate island for the long-term care of children who commit crimes and may commit crimes.
Speaking on PSM's “Raajje Miadhu” program, the minister said the aim is to stop the use of children in gang crimes and drug trafficking.
In order to accelerate the long-term care of children exposed to crime, the Minister said he is looking into the possibility of starting this work in Dh. Vaanee, a police-controlled village. The island has already run various programs for children related to crime.
Children between the ages of 15 and 18 will be taken into the custody of the ministry with the permission of their parents and the decision of the courts, he said.
Under a rule determined by the ministry, the families of the children will be given the opportunity to visit the village and participate in some programs conducted in the village, he said.
The programs will be conducted with the assistance of army and police teams to teach children skills in various jobs to make them useful to the society. The police and army, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Family and Gender and the Ministry of Islamic Affairs will participate in the effort along with the Home Ministry, he said.
