The National Center for Cultural Heritage (NCC) and Stelco have held meetings to discuss the preparations for the renovation, repair, and decoration of the Friday Mosque, its grounds, minaret, and shrine. The Center for Cultural Heritage said that the survey was conducted on the 11th of this month in collaboration with the Malé City Council and Stelco.
The center said the work is scheduled to start within the next two weeks. The Ministry of Dhivehi Language and Culture has earlier announced that it will renovate the area before the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
The area including the Friday Mosque, its minaret, and shrine was declared a cultural area by the previous government. The area was designated as a cultural site as part of the efforts of various governments to include the mosque in the permanent list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
