Democrats Pledge Support for Fair Trial and Efforts to Free Former Maldivian President Yameen

A breakaway faction from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), known as the Democrats, has expressed their commitment to doing everything possible to secure the release of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence for money laundering. In a press conference held on Monday, the Democrats, after engaging in talks with the main opposition party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), emphasized their support for Yameen's right to a fair trial.
During the press conference, Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim stated that the Democrats believe it is unfair for Yameen to be the sole individual serving a prison sentence in a case that involves multiple culprits. Azim expressed his concern over the conviction and imprisonment of one person alone. He further asserted that the opposition leader should be granted a fair trial.
When asked about the Democrats' involvement in PPM's efforts to secure Yameen's freedom, Azim indicated that the party would participate in these endeavors in the future. However, he clarified that the Democrats do not endorse PPM's 'India Out' movement. Azim highlighted that the two parties are making compromises to collaborate and work together, but it will take time for them to align their principles fully.
As part of their joint efforts, PPM and the Democrats announced plans to hold a joint rally on the following Monday, although the specific details regarding the time and venue are yet to be disclosed. Additionally, a joint committee consisting of representatives from both parties has been established to engage in bipartisan discussions.
