Male' Area Population on the Rise: Census Reveals Increase in Residents

The preliminary findings of the 2022 Census have revealed that the population of people living in the Male' area is on the rise. The National Statistics Department has released data that shows the proportion of people living in Male' city has increased from 39% in 2014 to 41% in 2022.
The census data reveals that a total of 212,138 people are living in the Male' area, with 65,724 residents in Hulhumale', making it the largest inhabited island in the area. The next highest number of people live in Maafannu ward in the capital, with 46,928 residents.
Interestingly, while the population of Hulhumale' has increased by 17%, the total population of the four wards of Male' city has only increased by 1.09%. Villimale', on the other hand, has seen a decline in population by 2.10%.
These findings have important implications for urban planning and development in the Maldives. As the population in Male' city continues to grow, there will be a greater demand for housing, infrastructure, and services. It is essential for the government to address these issues to ensure that the city remains livable and sustainable.
Moreover, the increase in population in the Male' area highlights the need for sustainable development outside the capital to alleviate the pressure on urban centers. It is crucial for the government to invest in infrastructure and services in other islands to encourage decentralization and balanced regional development.
