Eleven cabinet ministers in the Maldives have failed to publicly declare their assets, as required by regulation. The ministers, who are supposed to fill out and publish an asset declaration form once a year, have not done so in the past 12 months.
Among the ministers who have not disclosed their assets are Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof, Tourism Minister Abdullah Mausoom, Fisheries Minister Dr. Hussein Rasheed Hassan, Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, Heritage Minister Yumna Maumoon, Transport Minister Aishath Nahula, Higher Education Minister Dr. Ibrahim Hassan, Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam, Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer, Home Minister Imran Abdullah, and Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid.
The reasons for the ministers' failure to declare their assets are not clear, but this is not an uncommon occurrence. In the past, government ministers have failed to submit their asset declarations on time. However, this has drawn criticism from the public and raised concerns about accountability and transparency in government.
It should be noted that the information on the asset declaration forms cannot be independently verified, as they are not audited. In some cases, cabinet ministers have been known to provide false information on these forms, further raising concerns about the reliability of the information disclosed.
