The Bangladeshi national, MD Alamgiri, who was arrested for having homosexual relations with multiple people and videotaping it has been sentenced to seven months and six days in jail.
Alamgiri plead guilty to the state’s accusations. Therefore, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to imprisonment of 7 months and 6 days. Although, since he was held in custody for 1 month and 19 days, it will be deducted from his original sentence.
During the proceedings, Alamgiri maintained his guilt and requested the court to lighten his sentence in light of his admittance. His sentence was lessened by one degree due to the admittance of guilt.
In addition to Alamgiri, several individuals were arrested in relation to the leaked videos, including the younger brother of the Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed, Nazim Saththar, former MP of the Nolhivaram constituency, Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel), and Police DED officer, Abdul Rahman Rafeeu. All four people were prosecuted under the penal code in alternative to the sexual offense law, which ensures a bolder punishment.
Prosecuting under the penal code brings a maximum of 9 months and 18 days of imprisonment on them for their offense, while the sexual offenses act would have incarcerated them for a period of seven to ten years.
