Will back President Solih in Presidential elections: Mariya

Defense Minister Mariya Didi has revealed that she will be backing incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the 2023 Presidential elections.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday, Minister Mariya said that she had had the opportunity of working closely with the President, adding that she ‘found him to be a great team leader, patient, willing to listen with an open mind but decisive when needed’.

President Solih had recently announced his intention to seek a second term in office, adding that he was the sole choice for the role. Solih’s allies say that the Presidential ticket needs to be awarded to the incumbent.

President Solih’s long time ally and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed had also announced his intention to run. Nasheed had argued that the decision on the Presidential ticket must be taken via a primary.
