MDP MP Calls For The Execution Of Those Who Led February 7 Coup

MP Ahmed Nazil (MDP - Hithadhoo South) has called for the “hanging” of those responsible for the “coup d’état” which allegedly caused President Mohamed Nasheed’s impromptu resignation on 7 February 2012.
Speaking at the Majlis today, MP Nazil said that what had happened “10 years ago yesterday” was something that “the people do not accept”. He said that “10 years ago today”, i.e. 8 February 2012, the harm inflicted by the police on Maldivian Democratic Party protesters was also something that “the people do not accept”.
He said that the country has not yet recovered from that day in Maldivian history. MP Nazil claimed that “justice” could only be served by hanging those who had engineered the “coup d’état”.
Although the MDP have consistently claimed that what had occurred on 7 February 2012 was a coup, Nasheed himself had, on several platforms, claimed that he had not been compelled to resign.
MDP protesters who took to the streets on 8 February 2012 had engaged in acts of violence and arson.
