The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) have set a limit on the amount yellowfin tuna that may be caught this year.
The IOTC announced the limit on yellowfin tuna this year to be 287,140 metric tonnes. The IOTC had determined different limits on each of its 24 member-states.
The largest limits had been granted to European Union nations, the region that includes the Maldives and Sri Lanka, Yemen, Seychelles,and the region around Pakistan.
The Maldives received a quota of 47,195 metric tonnes, and EU nations were given a quota of 73,146 metric tonnes. Yemen was given 26,262 metric tonnes, 31,066 metric tonnes for Sri Lanka, and 30,359 metric tonnes of Seychelles, and 14,468 metric tonnes for Pakistan.
The IOTC stated that although an upper-limit had been determined on yellowfin tuna for this year, the limit may still be subject to revision.
