Budget Deficit Exceeds Prior Estimates By MVR 1 Bn

The national debt has exceeded the estimates made in the 2021 State Budget by about MVR 1 billion.
According to the monthly statistics published by the Ministry of Finance, the State had earned MVR 19 billion in revenue as of 23 December 2021. The State’s expenses in that same period had been MVR 32 billion.
This amounts to a budget deficit of about MVR 13 billion, funded by external and domestic loans.
The 2021 State Budget, approved by the Majlis in 2020, had estimated a total budget deficit of MVR 12.3 billion; a value about MVR 1 billion short of the actual budget deficit that the State had incurred.
MVR 6.2 billion had been spent towards PSIPs. MVR 22.3 billion had gone towards recurrent government expenses.
