President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that the minimum wage will be finalized after consulting with employers, not just with employees.
Speaking in Thoddoo, during a tour of six islands in Alifu Alifu atoll, President Solih said that discussion with the employer and the employee was important in determining the minimum wage.
The Minimum Wage Board, an advisory committee to the Ministry of Economic Development, had proposed MVR5,700 (USD$368.79) a month as a minimum-wage on the 5th of this month.
While small businesses that had 8-hour shifts would require a minimum wage of MVR 5,700, as per the current proposals; Civil Service employees will be paid a minimum wage of MVR 7,000.
Mid-sized businesses would be required to pay MVR8,000, and large businesses would be required to pay MVR10,200.
