A statement released by the Ministry of Economic Development said that it was conducting further research into the minimum wage value proposed by the Minimum Wage Advisory Board.
According to the statement, the Minimum Wage Board had proposed the following conditions:
1. Small businesses in the private sector would pay a minimum wage of MVR 5,000
2. Mid-sized businesses in the private sector would pay a minimum wage of MVR 7,000
3. Private sector businesses that were neither mid-sized nor small would pay an amount of MVR 8,900
4. Permanent employees of the public sector would pay MVR 7,000 a month
The Ministry said that they were currently conducting research into the proposal. They said that they would publish the final decision after the research was completed.
According to a source speaking to Dhiyares on the condition of anonymity, business tycoon, and leader of the pro-government Jumhooree Party, had expressed his concern and displeasure to President Solih regarding the Minimum Wage Advisory Board's proposals. Qasim and the Jumhooree Party, however, had denied these claims as false.
